Finding a Mentor

At some point in my past, someone trained me that it was more important to be “right” than it was to simply be me. (As if there’s even a “right.”)

When you accept a premise like that, as I did for so long, a few things happen:

  1. You forget who you are.
  2. You forget what makes you unique.
  3. You forget what makes you valuable.
  4. You forget why you’re here.
  5. You go in search of those answers in the only place you’re never going to find them… and that is outside of yourself.

How do you find the answers to all of these questions?

The only place you’re going to find these answers is to “mentor” yourself to get them. And so how does that work? Does it hurt?

Frankly, I have no idea how it works for you. I only know how I get the answers to come out of ME. Maybe it’ll work for you, maybe it won’t.

What I do is I stop listening to everyone. And I just sit there. Figuratively and literally. Some might call this meditation. Call it whatever you want. Just allow your mind to relax for a while. And then relax some more. And then, when you think you’re getting “somewhere,” realize you’re never going to get ANYWHERE and just let that thought go too.

Next, I stop focusing on trying to get answers. That’s something the world taught you… If you want something, just go “make it happen.”

That’s a pretty tense way to go through life. And when you’re so focused on LOOKING for something you lose your ability to DISCOVER much of anything. And just like sticking your hand in the cookie jar and then tensing up your fist means you can’t pull your hand out to eat some candy, that level of tension seems to work against you.

Finally, start paying attention. That means you catch yourself when your monkey mind is trying to drown you in thought chatter.

My answers seem to come when I’m least interested in finding them. Isn’t that how the client game works too? Clients tend to show up when you DON’T need them.

Hmmm…. could there be a connection? Of course there’s a connection.

It’s funny that we’re walking around in human suits made of some of the most advanced technology ever known and we have no idea how to use it.

No one gave us an instruction manual. I guess the universe or whatever you want to call it has a sense of humor.

There are plenty of helpers along the way, of course. So if you want help, ask. But ultimately, if you want to discover the best “mentor” you have physical access to, go look in the mirror.
